How to Read an Assignment
如何阅读作业

首先要搞明白
Assignment的目的是什么
（老师为什么会布置作业呢？）
从这个角度上出发：

Assignment主要是让你能证明，你的确有好好学习课程资料并且有着自己看法和思考。
Assignments usually ask you to demonstrate that you have immersed yourself in the course material and that you've done some thinking on your own
看来
只要认真的学习了课程资料
学习过程中肯定会有所思考
完成Assignment并不是难事
但也要更加注意
下列两项：

Beware of straying
小心偏题
阅读理解一定要谨慎，特别是看到这两个单词"discussion" and "analysis" ，完全是两个概念，
还有，随随便便动笔写的话，不自觉的就可能越拐越偏，到最后可能就~拐~不~回~来~了~（这种情况常有￣へ￣）
为防止这种情况，请在写论文的时候，不时的回过头看看你的写作要求~啊喂(#`O′)，
现在写的内容到底符不符合题目要求，在偏离写作的时候悬崖勒马，可是非常重要的哦~

Consider the relation
考虑到以前的作业和以后的作业相关性
这个主要是有些作业是大项目中的小步骤，而有一些，老师喜欢在之前的assignment 上再加一点新任务。
（像有的时候，一道题目会出三个问题答，都是这样层序渐进，有一定相关性）
所以，千万不要天马行空，把握题目中的逻辑，抓住重点答题就好啦~

"discuss" 和 "analyze"
到底有什么区别~
先来看这个题目

Discuss the role of gender in bringing about the French Revolution
讨论性别在法国大革命中所起的作用
首先
“Discuss”虽然在词典中有“讨论”的意思
好像颇具随意和口语化。
但放在Essay这种学术写作中，
“Discuss”应该被看做“论述”
你应该对你的论点进行广泛的论证

就以上面的例子而言，
你可以从这样几个点来进行“discuss”：
- pointing to consistencies and inconsistencies in the evidence of gendered causes of the Revolution;
- raising the implications of these consistencies and/or inconsistencies (perhaps they suggest a limited role for gender as catalyst);
- evaluating different claims about the role of gender;
- asking what is gained and what is lost by focusing on gendered symbols, icons and events.
错误的做法是
仅仅名列一些法国大革命的某一些事件
比如国王和玛丽·安托瓦内特
分别在这场革命中起到了什么作用
这样对每个这样的“性别角色”
如何造就政治影响进行点评
没有自己的主题
只是重申了作业中提出的问题
即“性别在法国大革命中的作用非常重要”
或“性别在法国大革命中没有发挥重要作用”
Essay写作
并不是对题目的重复叙述
这就是我们所提到的小心偏离
注意写作中要实时反思检查
我们来看看下一个例子
关于“Analyze”

Analyze two of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, including one not discussed in class, as literary works and in terms of sources/analogues.
分析Chaucer's Canterbury 故事集中的两个，包括在这本（文学作品中找）一个在课堂上没有讨论的故事。
Analyze的释义：
分析，研究，分解

在这个题目中，
Analyze只意味着你要做两件事情：
首先，你要先“分解”
先把这两个故事的特征，元素，标志，各个组成部分，结构框架从这些角度来“分解”。
甚至可以结合历史事件以及学术研究等多个主题来看，说不定会有很多新颖的发现。
看文风和“门派”以及类型
它们在Boccaccio或Roman de la Rose中的来源：戏弄，文字游戏，恶作剧，滑稽戏，讽刺等。
其次，consider the two tales critically
请批判性思考
In the course of your essay, you might work your way to investigating Chaucer's broader attitude toward his sources, which alternates between playful variation and strict adherence.
Your complex analysis of kinds of humor might reveal differing conceptions of masculine and feminine between Chaucer and his literary sources, or some other important cultural distinction.

Analysis involves both a set of observations about the composition or workings of your subject and a critical approach that keeps you from noticing just anything—from excessive listing or summarizing—and instead leads you to construct an interpretation, using textual evidence to support your ideas.
